Writing, for me, has been cathartic.
I was inspired after reading two amazing people tell their stories.
The first was a friend, who went through hell in a marriage she had been pressured into. She had no help trying to leave, but managed to do it in the end, with focus and determination. She’s been able to take steps towards carving out a life completely different to the role of the traditional girl who was there to keep everyone else happy, at the cost of her own hopes, dreams and happiness.
My main abuser, my Mum, was always terrified I would have a voice, and that people would find out about the lies she told, and the things that were going on, so she would tell people the most hurtful things about me, with the help of other close family members, so I wouldn’t be believed.
This is my story, and I hope it inspires other people to speak out, whatever you might be going through, and please remember there are always people out there to help you.
The second was a family member of a doctor who has been helping me.
She’s was the first refugee to arrive in the UK escaping Cambodia, which had been taken over by the Khmer Rouge, who killed and tried to enslave huge swathes of the population.
This woman had such determination it was hugely inspiring to me.
